FAQ

Frequently asked questions about upload.am.

Getting started

What is upload.am?

Cloud storage and backup with built-in secure file sharing: keep files in a cabinet, back up your computer and phone with the official apps, and send a controlled link. It is not a one-off transfer page that expires in a few days, and not a bare cyberlocker — there is a real cabinet, official Windows and Android apps, and a free VPN with every account, including Free.

Do I need an account to upload a file?

No. Drop a file on the homepage and you get a shareable link right away, no sign-up. Create an account for a cabinet with folders and search, a personal Upload Inbox, the desktop and mobile apps, and more storage.

Is it really free?

Yes, and Free is a genuinely usable product, not a crippled trial: 25 GB storage, 5 GB per file, the full cabinet, both official apps, a free VPN, password links, download limits, burn-after-download, group links, and Upload Inbox. No credit card, no auto-upgrade.

What languages does the site work in?

The whole interface — not just marketing pages — works in 12 languages, picked automatically from your browser or switchable from the language menu.

Storage, files and retention

How long are my files kept?

It depends on the plan. Free: as long as you use your account. If nobody signs in for 180 days we email you 30, 15 and 7 days before and only then delete the account, and downloads of your files count as activity. Keep: 1 year from the last upload or download. Plus, Premium, Premium GOLD and Team: as long as the plan is active. Lifetime plans: as long as your account exists.

What happens to my files if I stop paying?

The account reverts to the Free plan. Nothing is deleted the moment a plan lapses, and your files then follow the Free rule: they stay while you use your account, and an account with no sign-in for 180 days is deleted after email warnings.

Can I get my storage back if I deleted a file by mistake?

Yes — files go to trash first, not straight to permanent deletion, and trash keeps file versions too. On top of that, a recently deleted file cannot be force-erased for a few days on any plan — a deliberate delay that protects you if someone else gets into the account and tries to wipe it.

Do you keep old versions of a file?

Yes. Upload a file with the same name into the same folder and the previous copy becomes a version — restore it, or just download the old copy without replacing the current one.

What is the biggest file I can upload?

It depends on the plan: 5 GB on Free, up to 100–300 GB on paid plans. Large files upload and download in resumable parts, so a dropped connection on a huge transfer does not mean starting over from zero.

Why are your paid plans measured in terabytes?

Because a gigabyte-sized paid tier stopped being a meaningful upgrade over Free years ago, so every plan above the entry level starts at 1 TB. Keep is the one exception on purpose — it stays at Free-level storage for people who only want longer retention at a low price. See :Pricing for the full ladder.

What if ransomware encrypted or I mass-deleted my files?

Use Restore to a date in your cabinet: pick the moment before the problem, preview what will change, and apply. Files deleted after that moment come back from the trash, changed files return to their earlier content from versions (the current content is kept as a version, so you can undo), and you can also send newer files to the trash. Deleted files can only be restored while they are still in the trash, so act quickly.

Can I unpack a ZIP in the cloud, and find duplicate files?

Yes. Archives up to 2 GB (ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ) have an Unpack button and open into a folder in your storage. The Free up space page finds identical files and empty folders and moves your selection to the trash, always leaving one copy.

Sharing and links

Can I password-protect a file?

Yes, on any plan, for any individual file — the recipient has to type the password on the download page before the file becomes visible.

Can I limit how many times a file is downloaded?

Yes. Set a cap on the link; once it is reached, the link stops working, on its own or combined with an expiry date.

Can a link delete itself after one download?

Yes — burn-after-download. Useful for anything you do not want sitting on a public URL indefinitely, like a one-time document or a set of private photos.

Can I send several files as one link?

Yes — a group link bundles files uploaded together into one link, downloadable individually or all at once as a ZIP when size allows. A folder link works the same way and stays current as you add files to it.

Can people send files to me without an account of their own?

Yes — that is Upload Inbox: a personal link (or an embeddable widget for your own website) that lets anyone drop a file straight into your account. You set the rules (password, allowed types, size limit) and accept or decline each file.

Can I put my own branding on the download page?

Yes, on any plan — a logo, a brand color, a title and a message on the page your recipients see.

What is a Drop Room?

A temporary two-way room with a deadline. You and your guest upload and download files in one place, and when the deadline passes the room and every file inside are deleted for real. Drop Rooms are free on every plan: Free allows one active room with up to 10 files and a deadline of up to 3 days, and paid plans raise those limits.

What is a Client Portal?

A permanent page for one client at its own address, with two-way file exchange, a welcome message and an optional password. Portals start with the Plus plan (1 portal), then Premium and Lifetime (5) and Premium GOLD (50). Your own logo and colours on a portal come with Premium and above.

Can I ask someone to sign a document?

Yes, in a Drop Room or a Client Portal from the Plus plan. The visitor reads the document and confirms; the name, email, IP address and time are saved as evidence. It is a click-to-sign record, not a cryptographic signature embedded in a PDF.

Can I lock a link to one person?

Yes. Restrict a link to one email address: the recipient confirms the address with a one-time code before the file opens.

Can people only view a file, without downloading?

Yes: choose View only in the link settings. Recipients open the files on the page with no download or ZIP button, and you can add a watermark with their email or IP address. This stops casual saving, but anyone who can see a screen can photograph it.

Can I limit a link to certain people or places?

Yes. Besides a password and an email code, you can require sign-in to upload.am or allow the link only from certain IP addresses, ranges or host names, and set an exact expiry date.

Can I see who opened my link?

Yes. Each link keeps a history of when it was opened, previewed, downloaded or saved, with the country, device, browser and whether the visitor was signed in. You can also have us remind a recipient who has not downloaded the files.

Can recipients keep the files without downloading?

Yes. A recipient with an upload.am account sees Save to my account and copies the files straight into their own storage. On a paid plan you can also enable direct file links for simple links.

Security and privacy

Is there really a VPN included?

Yes, a no-logs OpenVPN connection with every account, including Free, for as long as the account exists. It is not a 7-day trial and not a separate subscription.

Is download speed limited on Free?

No. Speed is unlimited on every plan, Free included. Free and guests wait 10 seconds before the download starts; paid plans skip even that.

Are there ads on the download page?

No, on any plan, including Free. Whoever opens your link sees your file, not third-party banners.

Can I encrypt a file before it reaches your servers?

Yes, in the Windows app — encrypt a file on your own machine before it ever leaves your computer, for the files where that extra step matters.

Can I sign in with Google?

Yes. Use "Continue with Google" on the sign-in or sign-up page: a new account is created on the free plan, and an existing account with the same email is linked to your Google account. Two-step verification and new-device confirmation, if you turned them on, still apply.

Can I stop files from being deleted for a while?

Yes. Lock files or folders until a date you choose: they cannot be deleted, renamed or overwritten before then, and a lock can only be extended. Teams can also lock every new file automatically and place a legal hold that keeps files from being erased permanently.

Do you keep backups of my files?

We take a daily snapshot of your files and keep the data of permanently deleted files for the backup depth set for your account type, so support can restore your account or a folder to a chosen day. Ask for it under Data protection. If backups are off for your account type, the page says so.

Is there protection against ransomware?

We watch for mass overwrites, mass deletions and files with ransomware extensions. If something looks wrong you get an email, and under Data protection you can undo all changes since the incident in one step.

Can I invite a contractor without paying for another seat?

Yes. Invite them as an external guest: a guest does not use a seat, sees only the folders you share with them and cannot create public links.

Can my company use single sign-on?

Yes, through OpenID Connect (Okta, Microsoft Entra, Google Workspace, Keycloak). A team admin enters the provider details and proves the company domain with a DNS TXT record. SAML is not supported.

What happens to files when an employee leaves?

Team files belong to the team. When a member is removed their files pass to the team owner, and admins can also hand a person’s files to another member in advance.

Can I ask a client for documents and remind them automatically?

Yes. Add a checklist to a room or client portal: documents, a questionnaire or an approval. The client sees the list, you see what is done, and we email the client a reminder every few days until it is finished.

Can I run a data room for a deal or an audit?

Yes. Turn on the NDA, set each document to open, view only or hidden, answer questions in the built-in Q&A, give a numbered document index and download a report of who read what. A view-only document cannot be downloaded through the site, but a browser can still display it, so it is not copy protection.

Can my client choose photos and send me the list for Lightroom?

Yes. Turn on photo selection in the room, the client taps hearts and sends the selection, and you download the file names as a list for Lightroom or Capture One.

Is your e-signature legally binding?

It is a simple electronic signature: the signer is identified by access to their email link, gives explicit consent and every step is logged in a certificate with hashes, times and IP addresses. Many everyday agreements accept it, but it is not a qualified or advanced signature, so for regulated documents check the law of your country.

Can I edit Word and Excel files in the cloud?

Yes, when the editor is switched on for the site: open a docx, xlsx, pptx or similar file, edit it in the browser with colleagues at the same time, and every save becomes a new file version.

Can I search for text inside scanned documents?

Yes. New photos of documents and PDFs are read in the background, and you can find them by a word from their text. Quality depends on the scan, and recognition covers English and Russian by default.

Can a company pay by invoice and get a contract?

Yes. Choose a plan, enter the company details and you get an invoice and a service agreement with an SLA as PDFs. After the bank transfer arrives we confirm it and the plan starts. Invoices start from a minimum amount.

Is there a free trial for teams?

Yes: one 14-day trial of a business team per person, without a card. We remind you before it ends, and your files are kept if you do not continue.

Can I see a demo before buying for my company?

Yes, leave a request on the demo page and we will arrange a short call.

Is there two-factor sign-in?

Yes. Turn it on in your account: a code is emailed at every sign-in, and you get eight one-time recovery codes, shown once when you enable it.

What happens if someone breaks into my account and tries to delete everything?

Recently deleted files cannot be force-erased for a few days on any plan — a cheap, real speed bump against exactly that scenario, not a marketing checkbox.

I lost my laptop or phone with the app. Can I wipe it remotely?

Yes. In Account → Devices press Erase data next to the app's device. From that moment its access to your files is cut at once. An up-to-date app also erases its local copies and keys the next time it connects to the internet; until then it cannot open anything from your account. If you change your mind before it connects, you can cancel the request. Web browsers are signed out with Sign out instead.

Can a Team use one encryption password, groups, and can I be in several teams?

Yes to all three. The Team owner or an admin can set one encryption password for the team: members who turn on Encrypt in my browser enter the same password, and the browser warns at once if it is wrong. We store only a check value, never the password, and changing it does not re-encrypt old files. Members can be put into groups and a folder can be shared with a group. And one person can belong to several teams and switch between them on the Team page (the API takes an X-Upload-Team header).

Can I make files that even upload.am cannot read?

Yes. Turn on Encrypt in my browser when you upload from the cabinet: the file is locked with your password on your device (AES-256-GCM) and we receive only unreadable data. We cannot recover the password. File names stay visible, and previews and unpacking do not work for encrypted files. Open them any time with the free decryption tool.

Will I be told about suspicious sign-ins?

Yes. We email you when your account is opened from a new device or country, in the browser or in an app, and you can require an email code for every new device. The Devices list shows where you are signed in and lets you sign out any of them.

How do I download my data or delete my account?

In Account → Your data you can download a copy of your data (JSON) and delete your account yourself. Your files, folders, links and messages are removed immediately; payment records stay without any link to you for accounting. Business customers can read our GDPR page and the Data Processing Agreement.

What can a Team owner see and control?

Owners and admins get an audit log (who did what, when, from which address, exportable to CSV), usage by member, folder permissions, and team policies: invite only company domains, forbid public links or require passwords and a maximum lifetime, and optionally trash old files automatically. Members can lock a file while editing it and discuss or approve it in comments.

Apps

Do I need to pay to use the Windows or Android app?

No. Both official apps are included on Free. A paid plan changes storage, file size and retention — never whether you can use the apps.

What does the Windows app actually do?

Cloud explorer, folder backup, live two-way sync, resumable transfers, Upload Inbox, share links, file versions, optional local encryption and bandwidth control — see :Windows for the full breakdown.

Is there a public API?

Yes, on the same account and the same presigned-upload protocol as the website — see the API docs linked in the footer.

Billing and plans

How does the Monthly / Yearly switch work?

Prices are shown per month. Choose Monthly to pay for one month, or Yearly to pay 10 times the monthly price for 12 months (2 months free). Crypto payments are one-time: nothing renews on its own and you renew by hand. Card payments are monthly subscriptions that renew automatically until you cancel; yearly billing by card is not available yet, but you can pay a full year at once with crypto.

What payment methods do you accept?

Cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover) on a secure hosted checkout, billed monthly, and crypto (USDT, USDC, BTC and ZEC) as a one-time payment. See :Pricing for the plans.

Can I upgrade or downgrade later?

You can upgrade at any time from the billing page in your cabinet: the new limits apply to your very next transfer, and existing files are re-evaluated under the new plan's rules at once. There is no self-service downgrade yet: a plan simply runs to its end date and then your account returns to the Free rules. To change sooner, write to support.

What does Team add on top of a personal plan?

A shared storage pool, owner/admin/member roles, per-folder permissions, and a company Upload Inbox — three tiers from 1 TB to 20 TB shared. See :Team.

How do I cancel a card subscription?

Card plans are billed by our payment processor. Use its unsubscribe page, linked at the bottom of the upgrade page in your cabinet. After you cancel, the plan stays active until the end of the period you paid for.

Do I get a receipt?

Yes. After every payment we email you your login, plan, storage, start and end dates and whether it renews automatically.

Can I get extra storage for free?

Yes. Invite friends: every friend who joins adds 25 GB to your storage, for up to four friends.

Can I share my plan with my family?

Yes. On any paid plan you can add up to 5 people by email. Everyone has their own login and private files, and you share the plan's storage and limits. You can create a Family album everyone can add to, and mark a member as a child: no public links or remote download, messaging only inside the family, and you can see the names and sizes of their files.

Is there priority support?

Yes. Messages from accounts on a paid plan are marked priority and answered first. Support replies arrive in your cabinet Inbox, with a red counter and a pop-up until you mark them read.
